“Oh you laugh…”

BenHoward_Winter1 BenHoward_Winter2

I took this photograph on the train home from the city this weekend. I used my iPhone and edited the first image with Afterglow and the second with Instagram. I was listening to Ben Howard on my commute and decided to add in these lyrics from the song “Bones“. I created the font using my Bamboo Stylus and iFontMaker for iPad. I brought my images into photoshop and added the text onto the images.

I can’t decide which I like better. I love the circle in the first image, but I really like how the text fits into the photograph on the second image. I thought I would show them both to you and you can tell me which you like better!

I also really like the Afterglow app. I just downloaded it the other day so I haven’t used it all that much yet. I did, however, edit all of my images from yesterday’s post with it. I really like how the app gives you different shaped frames like circles, hearts and triangles, and there are quite a few filters to choose from. You can also edit the brightness, contrast, exposure, hue, saturation, tint, and temperature of your photos. I can’t wait to take some more pictures and really play with them in Afterglow (that will definitely be an upcoming post!).

I hope everyone has a great Wednesday!

Hand Printed Wrapping Paper

Today was my first day of Christmas vacation (yay!) and I have been super busy finishing up my shopping and getting some presents wrapped. I decided this morning (last minute, of course) that I wanted to hand print my own wrapping paper this year. So I took a quick run to Walmart, bought 4 rolls of brown Kraft paper, and got straight to work!

At first, I was going to just roll out a length of the Kraft paper, but I didn’t know how long it would take the ink to dry, so I took my presents, measured out individual pieces and cut them down to the correct size. Once I had each piece of paper ready, I started printing! I used stamps that I previously made so that saved me quite a bit of time.

When I finished printing, I made little gift tags and colored my own twine, and then wrapped up the presents!

I’m so happy with the way they turned out and I love the homemade feel to them! I hope the person who receives these will be just as pleased!

I hope this post has given you some creative ideas for how to wrap your gifts this year!

P.S. I can’t believe Christmas is 4 days away!

Hand Printed Christmas Cards, Pt. 3

It was a very dreary, wintery day yesterday…the perfect day to leisurely wake up, get right into comfy, warm clothes, and work on some art projects while listening to Christmas music. My goal for the day was to print some more Christmas cards. I wanted to use the “Let it Snow” I drew last week and then make some snowflakes to go around the writing. I made a quick mock up of my idea in Photoshop. As you can see, I have the writing flipped because when I make the stamp, the writing needs to be reversed so that it prints the correct way.

LetitSnow

I took this print and placed it over my linoleum stamp, with transfer paper in between, and transferred the writing onto the stamp.

Once it was transferred, I started carving.

Next, I made my snowflake stamps.

And finally it was time to print! I started with the “Let it Snow” stamp in red.

Then, I added the snowflakes in white.

I could have stopped here, but I wanted to use the glitter glue I bought last week at Michaels, so I added that on top of the snowflakes to give them some sparkle (the glitter is kind of hard to see in the photo).

LetitSnowCard4

I printed 8 of these cards and I love how they turned out. I really like the way the white and red look on the brown card and I’m really glad I added glitter to the snowflakes.

I wanted to try one more design, so I went back to the Christmas light stamps I used for the gift tags. I loved the way the tags looked, so I decided to translate the same idea to a card. I used all the same colors and lined the lights along the bottom of the card.

Then, I added a black line to connect the lights.

They still didn’t seem quite complete, so I took the gold glitter glue and added small lines at the top of the lights.

This might be one of my favorite cards so far! I love the different colors and the touch of gold glitter.

It’s probably time I start mailing some of these cards out…Christmas is only two weeks away!

Upcoming Workshop & New Doodles

Sunday, I am taking a Screen Printing Intensive at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn. After dabbling in stamping and stenciling, I’m really excited to try this method of printmaking. I’m not sure what to expect, so I’m going in with an open mind. It may be difficult or easy; I may love it or hate it. Either way, its something I’ve wanted to try so I’m finally taking the time to do it!

I need to bring in a design for the class, but I still haven’t settled on one. They suggest staying away from anything with really fine lines. I also have to keep in mind that the design will be printed in one color, just like when I did the stamping, so I think I may want to start out with something simple. I have been doing a lot of doodling lately, so I thought I would share some of those sketches with you.

Reindeer

Reindeer I drew a few years ago…I thought he might be cute on a card

I also want to try stamping words on the front of a card:

LetitSnow

Before I make the stamp, however, I have to flip the writing so that it prints the correct way. If I made a stamp from the above image, it would print backwards on my card. So my stamp will look like this:

It’s getting down to the wire and I really need to decide what I am going to print on Sunday. Please feel free to leave any and all feedback/suggestions in the comments! I’m open to everyone’s opinion 🙂

I hope you all have a great weekend! Enjoy the Christmas spirit that’s in the air!!
