My Weekend via Instagram – Hoboken Edition

Happy Monday, Everyone! I hope you all had a lovely weekend! The sun was finally shining here in Hoboken and I was able to spend some time walking around my new neighborhood, becoming acquainted with the area. What I really love about this town so far is how walkable it is. Hoboken is only about a square mile, so it is really easy to get everywhere on foot. This weekend, it was so enjoyable to stroll along in the sun, taking in all of the sights, shops and restaurants this town has to offer. I even took a walk down to the water and photographed the sparkling view of the NYC skyline.

I bought a plant for my kitchen yesterday! I love the way he looks. Now I just need to find a name for him…

Along with getting to know the area, I’m really enjoying the process of making my apartment home. I hope to add new things bit by bit (like my plant!) and I hope that it continually evolves.

How was your weekend? I hope you all got some sun too! Until the next post…

Ben Howard at Terminal 5

Monday night, I saw Ben Howard at Terminal 5 in NYC with some friends. Bottom line, he was amazing and everyone needs to go listen to his music right now, if you haven’t already. He is a crazy talented guitarist, has a beautiful voice, writes great lyrics, and was awesome live. The band he played with was just as talented and they created a fantastic concert experience. His music is currently on repeat on all of my devices…yes, I am slightly obsessed.

If you’ve never listened to him, you should definitely check out some songs on Youtube. I was going to try to give you a list of my favorites, but found myself writing down every single song on his album Every Kingdom. But I’m going to try really hard to give you a list of my top 5 favorites – ones I couldn’t live without. (Links to Youtube video)

Old Pine

Black Flies

Bones (I used the lyrics in this song on a photograph I took on the train)

Burgh Island

The Wolves

And because I love his lyrics so much, here are a few of my favorites:

“Hot sand on toes, cold sand in sleeping bags / I’ve come to know the friends around you / Are all you’ll always have / Smoke in my lungs, or the echoed stone / Careless and young, free as the birds that fly / With weightless souls now.” – Old Pine

“Give me shelter, or show me heart / Come on love, come on love. / Watch me fall apart, watch me fall apart.” – Only Love

“I saw a friend of mine the other day, / And he told me that my eyes were gleamin’. / Oh I said I had been away, and he knew, / Oh he knew the depths I was meanin’. / And it felt so good to see his face, / Or the comfort invested in my soul. / Oh to feel the warmth of a smile, / When he said “I’m happy to have you home.” – Keep Your Head Up

“Winter stole summer’s thrill / And the river’s cracked and cold” – Black Flies

“And meet me there, bundles of flowers, / We wait through the hours of cold / Winter shall howl at the walls, / Tearing down doors of time.” – Promise

“Oh if you’re there / When the world comes to gather me in / Oh if you’re there / I will be blessed” – Blessed

This was a very difficult list to make. Please don’t ask me to pick my favorite Ben Howard songs ever again! I may or may not be buying tickets to see him again in six months…

Let me know what you think if you check out his music! 🙂

A Winter Sunday in Hoboken

Sunday morning, I drove into Hoboken and walked around the city a bit. It was flurrying on and off, but it was a nice, crisp winter day and the view from the waterfront was beautiful. I took some photos with my iPhone and edited them using Afterglow (I mentioned this app in Thursday’s post) and then Instagram.

I love the vintage film effect I achieved with Afterglow

Edited in Afterglow then brought into Instagram and added an additional filter and changed the focus

Edited in Afterglow – used a vintage effect again

I can’t get enough of this circle frame (Afterglow)

Another circle frame with Afterglow and then used Instagram’s focus effect

Added a filter in Afterglow and then used the Lux (that little sun) effect in Instagram and created a focal point

I really like the editing capabilities of Afterglow, such as the different frame shapes, filters, and lens flare effects. What it’s missing though, is the ability to play with the focus the way you can in Instagram. So I edited the photos with Afterglow and then brought them into Instagram to create a focal point. In some images, I added an Instagram filter on top of the Afterglow filter. I really like the way the images turned out and I love the vintage effects I was able to create. It still boggles my mind how quick and simple it is to create beautiful photos on a little phone. Sometimes, Photoshop is just too much.
