My How the Summer Flies By!

Hi Friends! I cannot believe that I have let 3 months slip by without posting a single thing! I am terribly sorry for my lack of blog motivation this past summer, but with a new season comes a fresh start, so here I am, back in action!

First, I want to give a BIG thank you to all of my readers for all of the positive feedback I have received on my DIY pillowcase tutorial! Thank you for the overwhelming number of comments, likes and shares I have received over the past few months! Your support means everything to me and it’s so great to see you guys following along and making pillowcases of your own! I love to hear about your projects and am always open to answering any questions you may have, so please don’t ever hesitate to drop me a line! It is because of you that I’ve decided to come back to my blog and set a new fall resolution for myself (because resolutions aren’t only for New Years, right?), which is to post at least once a week. As much as I would like to post everyday, ever since I moved and started my new job, I have found I just don’t have as much time as I used to. But if I can reach out to all of you at least once a week, then I think it’s a step in the right direction!

So I’ll start this new post with a quick recap of my summer! I don’t know about all of you, but for me, the summer flew by faster than I would have liked. Even so, it was a great summer, filled with trips to the shore, swims in the ocean, frozen drinks outdoors, concerts and baseball games, strolls along the water, and time spent with good friends…

Frozen margaritas were our kick off to summer Friday hours, I went to my first Yankees game (it was a beautiful night!), and attended the opening reception of "The Art of the Brick" at Discovery Times Square

Michael Kiwanuka and Ben Howard played in Central Park, I stumbled upon a carnival in the middle of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and soaked up as much sun as I could down the shore

I found some awesome new goodies for my apartment, did a little painting of my own, spent a long weekend in LBI with great friends, enjoyed a evening run in Central Park when the weather wasn't too hot, and took a stroll along the High Line

And what’s the summer without some good books?

Call Me Zelda by, Erika Robuck (in the spirit of The Great Gatsby); A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by, Anthony Marra (my new favorite book - grab a box of tissues!); Beautiful Ruins by, Jess Walter (take me to Italy!)

So there you have it! My summer in a nutshell. What was the highlight of your summer? Are you all ready for fall or are you still trying to make it to the shore one last time and tell yourself that the summer really isn’t over until September 21st (this is clearly what I’m trying to do!)?

Ben Howard at Terminal 5

Monday night, I saw Ben Howard at Terminal 5 in NYC with some friends. Bottom line, he was amazing and everyone needs to go listen to his music right now, if you haven’t already. He is a crazy talented guitarist, has a beautiful voice, writes great lyrics, and was awesome live. The band he played with was just as talented and they created a fantastic concert experience. His music is currently on repeat on all of my devices…yes, I am slightly obsessed.

If you’ve never listened to him, you should definitely check out some songs on Youtube. I was going to try to give you a list of my favorites, but found myself writing down every single song on his album Every Kingdom. But I’m going to try really hard to give you a list of my top 5 favorites – ones I couldn’t live without. (Links to Youtube video)

Old Pine

Black Flies

Bones (I used the lyrics in this song on a photograph I took on the train)

Burgh Island

The Wolves

And because I love his lyrics so much, here are a few of my favorites:

“Hot sand on toes, cold sand in sleeping bags / I’ve come to know the friends around you / Are all you’ll always have / Smoke in my lungs, or the echoed stone / Careless and young, free as the birds that fly / With weightless souls now.” – Old Pine

“Give me shelter, or show me heart / Come on love, come on love. / Watch me fall apart, watch me fall apart.” – Only Love

“I saw a friend of mine the other day, / And he told me that my eyes were gleamin’. / Oh I said I had been away, and he knew, / Oh he knew the depths I was meanin’. / And it felt so good to see his face, / Or the comfort invested in my soul. / Oh to feel the warmth of a smile, / When he said “I’m happy to have you home.” – Keep Your Head Up

20130212-093408.jpg

“Winter stole summer’s thrill / And the river’s cracked and cold” – Black Flies

20130212-093413.jpg

“And meet me there, bundles of flowers, / We wait through the hours of cold / Winter shall howl at the walls, / Tearing down doors of time.” – Promise

20130212-093419.jpg

“Oh if you’re there / When the world comes to gather me in / Oh if you’re there / I will be blessed” – Blessed

This was a very difficult list to make. Please don’t ask me to pick my favorite Ben Howard songs ever again! I may or may not be buying tickets to see him again in six months…

Let me know what you think if you check out his music! 🙂

My Week via Instagram

Instagram_Feb11

I got a haircut this week…probably my last one for awhile, seeing as how my hairdresser works Tues. – Thurs. and I will be commuting to and from NY for my new job. I suppose I could try to find someone knew, but I love my hairdresser. She is the first and only one I have ever trusted and she does a fantastic job every single time! So, for now, I will let it grow until I can get to her again.

I worked on some fun DIY projects this weekend, including a Valentine’s Day shirt for my sister. I am really excited to share the other project with you – stay tuned for a tutorial this week!

My fortune from Chinese last night…It’s so true! But, fortune cookie, you’re a little late in telling me this because they’ve already begun developing!

I hope everyone has a great Monday! I am SO excited because tonight I’m seeing Ben Howard in NY with some friends! (If you’ve never listened to him before, please check him out. He is amazing.) I think it is going to be a fantastic show. He is so talented and I can’t wait to see and hear him live! I will let you all know how it is tomorrow 🙂

“Oh you laugh…”

I took this photograph on the train home from the city this weekend. I used my iPhone and edited the first image with Afterglow and the second with Instagram. I was listening to Ben Howard on my commute and decided to add in these lyrics from the song “Bones“. I created the font using my Bamboo Stylus and iFontMaker for iPad. I brought my images into photoshop and added the text onto the images.

I can’t decide which I like better. I love the circle in the first image, but I really like how the text fits into the photograph on the second image. I thought I would show them both to you and you can tell me which you like better!

I also really like the Afterglow app. I just downloaded it the other day so I haven’t used it all that much yet. I did, however, edit all of my images from yesterday’s post with it. I really like how the app gives you different shaped frames like circles, hearts and triangles, and there are quite a few filters to choose from. You can also edit the brightness, contrast, exposure, hue, saturation, tint, and temperature of your photos. I can’t wait to take some more pictures and really play with them in Afterglow (that will definitely be an upcoming post!).

I hope everyone has a great Wednesday!

Things I’m Lovin’ in January

Lovin1 Lovin2

1. I am loving Leinenkugal’s Snowdrift Vanilla Porter and Southern Tier’s Choklat Stout. They’re dark and sweet, but the flavors aren’t overpowering. They’re perfect for the winter!

2. I am loving patterned tights this season and went a bit overboard the last time I was at Express (they were buy one get one 50% off!) Here are a few that I purchased:

Sheer Lace Full Tights (what I’m wearing in the photo)

Sheer Small Dot Full Tights

Diamond Texture Full Tights

3. I am loving The Lumineers self-titled album. It is filled with spirited, infectious beats that you just can’t help bobbing your head and tapping your feet to. I’m sure most of you have heard their popular single “Ho Hey!” and have experienced the immediate smile that crosses your face as you take in the romantically simple lyrics of “I belong to you, you belong to me, you’re my sweetheart.” Some of my other favorites are “Dead Sea,” “Stubborn Love,” and “Big Parade.”

I am also becoming slightly obsessed with British singer-songwriter Ben Howard and his album Every Kingdom. The acoustic guitar and his soothing voice make it a great album to sit back and chill out to. One of my favorites is “Old Pine,” which I think really demonstrates his song-writing ability. He sings, “Hot sand on toes, cold sand in sleeping bags, I’ve come to know that memories were the best things you ever had. The summer shone beat down on bony backs, so far from home where the ocean stood, down dust and pine cone tracks.” When you listen to it, you are transported to the woods and really feel like you’re camping with your best friends in the heat of the summer. A couple other favorites from the album are “The Wolves” and “Black Flies.” I’m hoping to get tickets to his show in NY in February!

4. I am loving my new Michael Kors watch in tortoiseshell! The reddish brown tones along with the gold go with everything!

5. I am loving all things that sparkle, especially when bows are added in – like this super cute belt my aunt gave me for Christmas!

6. My parents got me New Girl Season 1 on DVD for Christmas and I can’t stop watching it. I watched it when it was on TV, but I love being able to watch episodes back-to-back non-stop. I am definitely going to have a “douche jar” in my apartment…just sayin’.

7. I am in the market for new perfume and I am loving Jimmy Choo. It’s got sweet hints of vanilla and patchouli and the scent lasts all day. And I love the description on Amazon because its all about being confident, fun and chic: “It expresses an aura of strength and beauty. Glamorous in attitude, confident, intelligent, and with a sense of fashion and fun, the fragrance is a modern fruity chypre with warm, rich, woody depths. It’s a fragrance inspired by modern women – strong, empowered, beautiful, seductive, and alluring with a hidden and mysterious sense of confident sexuality.”

Stay Curiously Chic! xo…Alane
