My How the Summer Flies By!

Hi Friends! I cannot believe that I have let 3 months slip by without posting a single thing! I am terribly sorry for my lack of blog motivation this past summer, but with a new season comes a fresh start, so here I am, back in action!

First, I want to give a BIG thank you to all of my readers for all of the positive feedback I have received on my DIY pillowcase tutorial! Thank you for the overwhelming number of comments, likes and shares I have received over the past few months! Your support means everything to me and it’s so great to see you guys following along and making pillowcases of your own! I love to hear about your projects and am always open to answering any questions you may have, so please don’t ever hesitate to drop me a line! It is because of you that I’ve decided to come back to my blog and set a new fall resolution for myself (because resolutions aren’t only for New Years, right?), which is to post at least once a week. As much as I would like to post everyday, ever since I moved and started my new job, I have found I just don’t have as much time as I used to. But if I can reach out to all of you at least once a week, then I think it’s a step in the right direction!

So I’ll start this new post with a quick recap of my summer! I don’t know about all of you, but for me, the summer flew by faster than I would have liked. Even so, it was a great summer, filled with trips to the shore, swims in the ocean, frozen drinks outdoors, concerts and baseball games, strolls along the water, and time spent with good friends…

Frozen margaritas were our kick off to summer Friday hours, I went to my first Yankees game (it was a beautiful night!), and attended the opening reception of "The Art of the Brick" at Discovery Times Square

Michael Kiwanuka and Ben Howard played in Central Park, I stumbled upon a carnival in the middle of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and soaked up as much sun as I could down the shore

I found some awesome new goodies for my apartment, did a little painting of my own, spent a long weekend in LBI with great friends, enjoyed a evening run in Central Park when the weather wasn't too hot, and took a stroll along the High Line

And what’s the summer without some good books?

Call Me Zelda by, Erika Robuck (in the spirit of The Great Gatsby); A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by, Anthony Marra (my new favorite book - grab a box of tissues!); Beautiful Ruins by, Jess Walter (take me to Italy!)

So there you have it! My summer in a nutshell. What was the highlight of your summer? Are you all ready for fall or are you still trying to make it to the shore one last time and tell yourself that the summer really isn’t over until September 21st (this is clearly what I’m trying to do!)?

Sorry I’ve Been MIA!

Hi everyone! I apologize for being MIA the past few days. I’ve been busy getting myself acquainted with my new job and routine, and I’ll be honest, the commute is kicking my butt! I’ve been getting up at 5:00 am to catch the 6:34 train, getting home at 6:45 and have been in bed by 9:00/9:30. Basically, I’ve had enough time to shower, eat dinner and watch a 30 min tv show. I’ve wanted to blog every night after work, but I come home and feel like this…

Luckily, that will all change in a week when I move to Hoboken! My 4 hour commute will change to less than 2 for the day and it will give me time to blog again!

One up-sides of commuting is that I’ve had time to read again! I haven’t seriously sat down with a book in a couple of months because I’ve spent all of my free time blogging or working on projects. I now have 4 hours everyday to read and it’s been awesome. I started Ready Player One By Ernest Cline (published by Crown!) on Monday and am a little more than halfway through it. It’s a futuristic novel, which normally isn’t what I gravitate towards, but I’m really enjoying it. The storyline is entertaining and there’s suspense, which always pulls me in!

Aside from the exhausting commute, my first week at Random House went very well! I really like everything I’m doing so far and everyone is so nice and welcoming! I’m excited to be learning new things and to be challenged by something again. Since it was the first week, I’m still just dipping my toes in, but I’m looking forward to seeing what next week will bring!

I hope you all had a great week! Does anyone have any fun plans for the weekend? I’m spending today and tomorrow packing and doing last minute shopping because I’m moving next Saturday (eeeeek!!!!!)! This is all I have packed so far…

Yes, my calphalon bread pan and my JT cup from his Future Sex Love Show tour (you can all judge me because I’m judging myself right now). Clearly, these two things are what I’ve decided are most important in my life. I need to get busy (and reevaluate my priorities) today or else this will be all I have in my apartment. I have never moved before, so I’m feeling slightly incredibly overwhelmed by the whole process. On my list of kitchen items to pack are my stenciled napkins and the mug I made in my pottery class. They’re going to look awesome in my kitchen!

Happy Saturday, everyone! I apologize in advance if you don’t see another post from me until after March 2nd. I will do my best to try to pop on here and at least say hi!

Thanks for reading!

I Found a Home!

In my recent post “2013: A Year of Ups,” I talked about all of the changes that are currently taking place in my life. I’m so excited to share my other bit of “big” news with you today!

If you read my post, then you know that I recently accepted a position at Random House in NY. Once I accepted, I figured I would be commuting from home for awhile because, let’s face it, the city is so expensive and I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford a one bedroom, or even a studio, on my own. I wanted to move out eventually because the commute is about 2 hours one way, but for now, I was settled on the idea of waiting a couple of months, that way I could save more money and maybe find a roommate to live with.

I should have known that things weren’t going to go as I had planned. Through a series of coincidental events, I was referred to a one bedroom apartment in Hoboken that is actually affordable! It is the cutest apartment and in a great area! So, as I’m sure you’ve now guessed, I signed the lease this past week and will be moving in March 1st!

About the apartment: It’s a one bedroom with an eat-in kitchen that opens up to a nice size living room. I love the layout because it’s long – you walk into the kitchen and move back through the living room into the bedroom. The setup creates a sense of privacy, which is something I feel like you don’t always get in a one bedroom. My absolute favorite part of the apartment though, is a little square room that connects the living room and bedroom. It has two sets of mirrored closets on one wall, which makes it a perfect dressing area. I am also picturing it as a little craft space. There is enough room for a desk, so I will have a place to work and will be able to create a storage space around it with wall shelves and drawers.

I can’t wait to post pictures once I get in there! Setting the place up is going to be a slow process, but that’s okay. I want to take my time and make it exactly how I want it. I want to add my own personal touch to it and try to do a lot of DIY projects for the space. So be prepared! In the coming months, you are going to be seeing a lot of posts about my new apartment, how I’m decorating it, projects I’m working on, and I will be asking all of you for advice on moving into a place and making it your own!

Happy Saturday!

2013: A Year of “Ups”

Thirty-five days ago I wrote a post about the things I learned in 2012. Even though it was not the best year, I walked away from it having learned a lot about myself and about life. Acknowledging the strength and confidence I gained, I was looking forward to 2013 and all of the new opportunities and changes it might bring. I toasted to a year of “ups” rather than “downs,” a year of new experiences and dreams, and a year of constant learning and growing.

Here we are, a week into February 2013, and already those words are manifesting themselves faster than I ever thought possible! Changes are taking place in my life that I did not expect (they always say things happen when you least expect it, right?) and everything is happening all at once!

Wednesday, January 23rd my friend, who works at Random House, called me to let me know about an opening in Crown’s Cover Art Department. It was for a Studio Assistant position and she thought I would be a really great fit. She passed my resume on to Human Resources and later that afternoon I was scheduled for an interview. I went into the city on Monday, January 28th, met with several people to discuss the position, and left the interview feeling like “I want this!” It sounded like a fantastic opportunity to get involved in a publishing house and I was excited for all the new changes and new opportunities the position could bring. Everything worked out in my favor and I was offered and accepted the position Wednesday morning! I can’t say that it was the easiest decision to make because I really do enjoy my work at the gallery. I have learned a great deal about running a small business, I am surrounded by beautiful art everyday, I love interacting with the wonderful artists we represent, and I have a very easy commute. A job in New York would mean no more waking up at 8 am everyday and driving 10 minutes to work. If I accepted the position, it was going to come with a huge lifestyle change that I had to make sure I was comfortable with. Ultimately, I felt like I would regret it for the rest of my life if I turned this opportunity down. I am terrified to leave my comfort zone, but I am learning that the only things worth doing in life are the ones that scare you. So, I accepted a Studio Assistant position at Random House in Crown Publishing Group’s Cover Art Department and start February 19th! I am so passionate about books and am thrilled that I will be able to assist in the production of book covers. I believe this position is going to open up a world of new possibilities and I am so excited to be learning and trying something new. To top it all off, it is in New York, which is exactly where I have always wanted to be.

Since I accepted the offer last Wednesday, my entire life has changed. I’m not quite ready to share all of it with you, but stay tuned for more! All of the events that have taken place since I said “yes” are so serendipitous. Everything is falling into place so smoothly and without any effort on my part, that I truly believe it is a sign that I have made the right decision. I am still in shock as to how fast everything has happened and that my life is in a completely different place than it was only a week ago. 2013 is shaping up to be an awesome year, a year filled with all of those things I proclaimed on December 31, 2012 – a year of “ups” rather than “downs,” a year of new experiences and dreams, and a year of constant learning and growing!

Now that I got all of that off my chest, did I mention how excited I am to be working with books?! Reading is a huge part of my life and when I saw that some of the books that Crown publishes are either my favorite books or on my “to read” list, I went through the roof! Here’s a list of some to give you an idea:

cover copy 2 cover copy 3 cover copy cover-1 copy cover-1 cover

I’m so excited to start this next chapter in my life and I can’t wait to share it all with you!

Thanks for reading!
